We stayed with Margot for a week helping her with renovating an outdoor bathroom in the Inner West of Sydney. During time off, we discussed politics, the environment, and current events.
HelpX, or Help Exchange, is a website connecting hosts and travelers. Hosts provide accommodation, and most of the time food, to travelers in exchange for a few hours of work per day. It is an excellent way to do interesting work, meet locals, travel slowly, and save money!
For about a week, we stayed with a lovely couple enjoying their newly retired lives in the Central Coast in Australia. We helped out with the small family farm not only in exchange for accommodation and food, but also comfy family vibes.
For a week, we volunteered with a local florist near the Daintree Rainforest. We prepared for wedding events while learning all about native plants and animals!
We finally made it down under to start our working holiday year in Australia! We started in the tropical north in the city of Cairns, famous for the jumpoff point of the Great Barrier Reef. The week was spent looking for a car and helping out with new friends via HelpX.
Volunteering in exchange for accommodation is an excellent way to have a meaningful experience while keeping travel costs low. Using Helpx.net, we tried seeking volunteer opportunities all around Southeast Asia, but only had luck in Thailand. For a little over a week, we helped on an organic farm and stayed for free at Faasai Resort & Spa, a peaceful eco-resort located a few hundred meters away from Kung Wiman Beach in Chanthaburi, Thailand.
